For the last 10 years he has lived in a small hut on the banks of India's largest west flowing river Narmada, on land to be submerged following construction of a multi-million dollar dam downstream on the river. His has become the focal voice amongst those raising questions against an over-centralised paradigm of development, which does not involve the people of the country in decisions affecting their lives. He advocates an alternative model of location specific decentratlised development, which grows organically from the soil and involves the people at every stage of emptied,conception, planning and execution . Under his inspiration, hundreds of voluntary groups all over the country are engaged in building precisely such alternatives, which integrate the insights of modern science with the traditional wisdom of the people of India.
